Tauranga Guide

Tauranga in the western Bay of Plenty is a popular area with visitors and tourists and a great place to stay or visit. Tauranga city center sits on a beautiful natural harbour protected by green forested Matakana Island and overlooking the extinct volcano of Mauao (Mount Maunganui). The area has a great range of bars and restraunts and extensive shopping area and local attractions on either side of the harbour and surrounding suburbs. On the west is Tauranga city center and over the bridge east leads to the Airport and into Mount Maunganui city centre, pilot bay and the beautiful pacific ocean beaches. Tauranga is one of New Zealand's fastest growing cities with a busy growing freight and cruise liner port.

It has an subtropical climate, popular white coastal surf beaches from Mount Maunganui to Papamoa. These often play host to organised surf and beach sport competitions, boating and sailing activities. Coastal islands and reefs make it a popular destination point for scuba divers, marine and boating enthusiasts. Other activities include swimming, surfing, fishing, diving, kayaking and kitesurfing. You can also book a specially run dolphin-watching boat trip or tour on the harbour. Tauranga also has many parks including Memorial Park, Yatton Park, Kulim Park and Fergusson Park.

Mount Mauganui

Mount Mauganui has many walk ways both up or around and is the perfect way to enjoy the stunning scenery and views around the harbour.

New Year celebrations at the Mount draw crowds from all around the country.

Baypark Stadium hosts Speedway racing events during summer and rugby matches in winter.

National Jazz Festival

The National Jazz Festival takes place in Tauranga every Easter, with various live acts and street carnival.

Bay of Plenty and Coromandel

Tauranga is just a 60min scenic country drive south to Rotorua which boasts many volcanic and cultural attractions. Beautiful parks and gardens, gondola cable rides, luge racing not to mention redwood forests and a selection of stunning lakes.

A 60min drive east along the pacific coast highway is Whakatane with beatiful beaches fishing and boating trips to White Island active volcano.

Drive west to Wahi historical gold mining town and onto the Coromandel peninsula with Hot Water Beach, the stunning cathedral cove not to mention the many impressive views over the pacific coast.
